Building community and heart into the Firefly 'verse
I am setting up an Encounter with a new client — so new, in fact, that he never heard of the Guild before he found himself Gazing with me. In the course of that initial conversation, he mentioned…Continue

This song is not my work. This song was written for, and performed at, the 2010 Browncoat Ball; alas, I do not know the name(s) of the creator(s) or I would give credit for this shiny composition.(To…Continue

My sisters and brothers, could you help me with my next lesson?I'm looking for examples of three qualities of character. Can you suggest men and women from widely-known fiction or better yet from…Continue

Proposition: If I could choose, from every woman who breathes on this earth, the face that I would most love, the smile, the touch, the voice, the heart, the laugh, the soul itself, every detail and feature to the smallest strand of hair — they would all be Jenny's.
Proposition: If I could choose from every man who breathes on this earth a man for my brother and a man for my son, a man for my friend, they would all be Lance.
[His bitterness mounts.]
Yes, I love them. I love them and they answer me with pain and torment. Be it sin or not sin, they betray me in their hearts and that's far sin enough. I see it in their eyes and feel it when they speak, and they must pay for it and be punished. I shan't be wounded and not return it in kind. I'm done with feeble hoping. I demand a man's vengeance!
[He moves violently, then tries to control himself.]
Proposition: I'm a king, not a man. And a civilized king. Could it possibly be civilized to destroy what I love? Could it possibly be civilized to love myself above all? What of their pain and torment? Did they ask for this calamity? Can passion be selected?
[His voice rising.]
Is there any doubt of their devotion ... to me, or to our table?
[He raises high the sword in his hand.]
By God, Excalibur, I shall be a King! This is the time of King Arthur, and we reach for the stars! This is the time of King Arthur, and violence is not strength and compassion is not weakness. We are civilized! Resolved: We shall live through this together, Excalibur: They, you and I! And God have mercy on us all.
[The decision made, he becomes almost relaxed, almost at peace.]
They are waiting for us at the table. [He starts to walk off.] Let's not delay the celebration.
[The music swells, as]
The Curtain Falls
Captain Fenris sneered as he looked around, sniffing loudly. "What is this? A kennel?"
The cavern was cool and dimly lit, and did indeed smell of an angry animal. At first sight, the cage in the back appeared empty, but as Yan stepped closer, she could see the sleeping feline curled up in the back. The cat jumped and hissed as Kat jabbed it through the bars with an arrow.
"Stop it," Yan snapped, not even looking at Kat. "If you want my help, you will let me talk with the Neqa…Continue

Yan sighed and resisted the urge to rub her face as she struggled to understand the proposal. Nothing was simple when Captain Fenris was involved. He seemed to be unable to understand that while the Guild trancendended governments, it could not ignore them. And Jaegen Fenris's relationship with the law seemed to consist entirely of avoiding any relationship with it at all.
Captain, I appreciate that your time on-world is limited, but-" She paused for the loud knocking on the door.…Continue

Reckonin you are Queen of Dakini Land, the Wise Woman,
Mother of Geisha, Courtesans and Homesteader of the Companions,
Lend an ear to our askin:
Lady Varahi, High Priestess, fire it up with your posse, be our guiding star.
You are easy on the eyes as the poppies of gold,
As welcome as a spring of sweet water deep in the desert,
As healin as cool camphor.
Lady Varahi, High Priestess, take the helm with your posse, gentle our…

After I had finished, the Acolyte Kalasiddhi bowed respectfully and made this request:
Mother, when you have vanished into the Core,
What should we Acolytes do?
Who will guide and teach us?
Still sustain the House with your compassion!
I answered her:
Listen, O Dakini, well-born lady,
Well-taught accomplished maiden,
You who show the path of virtue
With a well-endowed body's selfless aspiration.
This community and future travelers on the…Continue
