The Firefly Companion's Guild

Building community and heart into the Firefly 'verse

A fork in the road, when seen from the other side...

A fork in the road when seen from the other side is a joining of two paths.

When I first came to the guild, much of my focus in Second Life was taken up with my Jedi roleplay.  At the time, most of my Second Life was devoted to being a Jedi.  At the time, I was very stoic, kind of aloof.  There certainly was not any sensuality in my main Second Life activities.  I joined the guild to address what I saw as a lack in my second life experience.

For years now I have seen my "Jedi Life"  and my "Acolyte Life" as two separate magisteria. I thought one had nothing to do with the other. I thought that one would not influence the other.  I thought many things.   I was wrong.

I am a better Jedi than I was those years ago when I started.  Also I am a better Acolyte than I was when I began.  I am nowhere near done with either of these paths, both a Jedi and a Companion I think will be no stranger to life-long learning.  But as my training in the Guild is becoming more demanding, I am finding a convergence of what makes me a good Jedi are traits that will make me a good Companion.

My focus is still primarily the Jedi Path, both in roleplay in Second Life, and as an applied philosophy in real life.  But I am finding the core values of what I want to be as a  Jedi have direct applications to my goal of becoming a companion.  Compassion sits at my core, and is a prime motivation.  Mindfulness while a Jedi trait, is indispensable to a companion.

But one of the things that I am really coming to terms is as a Jedi I need both non-attachment and attachment. There are the attachments that are necessary for life, such as food and shelter, and there are attachments which are clearly beneficial such as the connections we share with our fellow human beings.  Some of these attachments are necessary to not only being a good Jedi, but for being a good person, and I am finding a good Companion.

I love the connections I have with my brothers and sisters in the guild, and I am looking forward to strengthening them, and in the upcoming term being of service through my house, Xiaojie.   I am glad to share this journey with all of you.

I can easily see how the two would intersect. Your Attachment classes last term spoke to me very deeply. I look forward to the future with you.
