The Firefly Companion's Guild

Building community and heart into the Firefly 'verse

Hi everyone! I created this thread as a place where people can post roleplay background stories so others can get a better understanding of your history and how you wound up becoming a part of the Companion Guild. To get things started with this thread I'm including my background story below. :)

-Childhood-
Anastasio was born to Andre and Angela Luminos in a small town named Hadden. His home town is in the South Enjay district of the Noreast region of the northern continent of Terra Incognita, which is the fourth planet of the El system.

Angela disappeared when Ana was seven. Andre was heartbroken, and became obsessed with finding his wife. Ana's father took out loans against his antique shop to pay for long trips chasing after even the flimsiest of leads. During the times Andre was home, Ana would see strangers coming in and making veiled threats to Andre.

When his mother disappeared, Ana also developed an obsession: reaching the end of a story his mother had been reading to him every night. While he had some elementary reading skills, he discovered he needed more when he'd tried reading the book on his own.

During the long weeks his father was away, he'd visit the bookstore next door. The elderly couple who ran the store began helping him improve his reading skills. Ana took to reading with a voracious appetite, and began asking to borrow other books when he finished his first one.

It was almost exactly a year after his mother disappeared when Ana found his father crawling the stairs up to the living quarters above the shop. The steps were slick with Andre's blood. Ana kneeled on the steps and held his father tight. Over his own sobbing, he heard Andre gasp, "Find her," before passing away.

Debt collectors soon came and took possession of the antique shop, leaving Ana homeless as well as an orphan. George and Lita Brooks, the couple who owned the bookstore beside his father's shop, felt pity for the child and took him in. They eventually discovered he had a knack for sales as well as a love of books, and took him on as an apprentice.

-Adolescence-
In the South Enjay district where Ana grew up, there is a traditional ceremony where children declare themselves to be boys or girls. While they may sometimes be called a boychild or a girlchild before then, they are usually only referred to as children until they make a declaration.

Most children go through the ceremony at the age of ten. Ana managed to put it off for almost two years. His procrastination ended when the local shepherd walked into the bookstore where he was apprenticed.

The couple who had taken Ana into their hearts as well as their home heard crying from the room the shepherd had taken the child. After waiting through a long period of quiet, George and Lita both frowned with confusion when Ana finally came back out.

Because of the way he acted and preferred dressing, they had expected his ears to be pierced with the small hoops girls wear. Ana was wearing the stud earrings normally seen on boys.

Their confusion was soon cleared up when he smiled brightly and declared, "I'm a boi!"*

[* A boi (pronounced bah-yee' (femme) or boh'-yeh (butch)) is someone who identifies as male or male-ish, but prefers to socialize with others as a female. Wearing feminine clothing is the most common way of indicating how he prefers to socialize with others, while wearing post earrings shows the gender with which he identifies.]

-Puberty-
A few months after his declaration, Ana began shooting up like a weed. By the time he was fourteen, he had gone from being the shortest among his peers to the tallest. Despite this promising development, Lita became concerned for her ward’s health, since Ana hadn’t developed any of the other physical indicators of puberty.

At first, George disagreed with his wife. The doctor had said Ana was just a late bloomer, and he saw no reason to worry. But eventually, when Ana was fifteen, George agreed that something seemed to be wrong, and the boi was taken to a specialist. The specialist performed a number of test before giving Ana and the Brooks the bad/good news.

The bad news was Ana had a condition called eunuchoidism*, which is a deficiency in the production or effectiveness of male hormones. The deficiency leads to sterility, abnormal tallness, and impaired development of secondary sexual characteristics, libido, and sexual potency.

The good news was, the condition was treatable with androgens. Once Ana got the specialist to explain what that meant and what it would do to his body, he flat-out refused. While the idea of being stronger intrigued him, he found the thought of becoming hairy everywhere repulsive.

While the Brooks were concerned about the choice their ward had made, they decided to respect his decision. The terrified child that had come into their lives years ago was no longer a child. He was a boi.

-Encounter-
Over the next few years, Ana’s skills as a bookseller grew in excellence. It got to a point where the Brooks seemed intent in making him a full partner, which frightened him. While he did a good job as a bookseller, his heart really wasn't in it. Most of his time was either spent reading or daydreaming of adventure.

Then one day, an unusual woman entered the bookstore. Even though she spoke softly, there was still a sense of self confidence and strength in her voice. Ana nearly dropped a whole pile of books on his feet when she looked at him.

Instead of treating him like a go-for and telling him to find the proprietor, she treated him with respect and asked him to help her find a book. After he found the book and brought it to her, she asked him, "What do you want?"

Thinking she was asking for a price and made an initial offer he thought would be fair. Instead of counter-offering, she said, "No, I meant, what do you want from life."

The boi just stood there with his mouth open. The woman smiled at him, placed a few coins in his hand while taking the book from his loose grip, then said, "Come find me when you have an answer."

Ana eventually found out the woman was a companion. After long and occasionally teary discussion with the people who had given him both love and a home, they all agreed he should go and try to find the mysterious companion.
